the thing was filthy. It took a wash, clay bar, second wash, was with a random orbit, then a hand polish. The wheels are still wrecked, and the interior this afternoon, but it cleans up good! Before pic for contrast.

Reds look great when looked after.
Some manufacturers paint is more worse than others and neglected single stage red paint just looks awful and a chalky pink.
Waxed or UV sealed will stand the paint in good stead for the future.
What’s wrong with the wheels? Brake dust, peeling lacquer, kerb rash, etc...?

I’ve never had a nice enough car to care but my Miata is at 30k miles and already has a ton of stone chips and hasn’t had a good wash in at least 20k miles. I finally live at house so I can personally wash it, need to do it soon.

Im thinking I’m going to strip them down to bare metal, sand, primer, paint, clear coat.

Ye’, they could do with a good refurb as the lacquer is peeling and kerb rash.
Thankfully because they are five spoke alloys with no intricate areas it will come up great once they are done.

Yup, mine were like that. Pops sanded them down and painted them with “hammer black” textured paint. I replaced them after a year for a set of bronze Konig Heliums because they’re the most affordable lightweight wheel for E-Street NB2s.
Now I have two sets of Konigs because I want to get as many autocrosses out of those tires as possible...and because Sport Comp 2s are better in the rain than most 200-treadwear tires.

Did you use a paint stripper first, or just sand? And how come nothing comes in a 16in wheel?

Just sanded it because pops didn’t want to risk damaging the tires mounted to them. Not sure why 16" wheels aren’t as popular as 15" or 17" wheels in terms of tire selection for autocross but with the Miata’s gearing is pretty ideal for autocross as-is with 195/50/R15s (I use 195/55/R15 for daily use).
